Addition and Subtraction Of Integers

Addition and Subtraction Of Integers

To be an integer, a number must be a whole number, zero and negative numbers. As long as there is no fractional component in a given number, it may be referred to as an integer. But, can we add and subtract integers just as we do with whole numbers? Let's take a closer look at these first two operations on integers to see how they work.

What Does Adding and Subtracting Integers Mean?

Negative integers (also known as zero) are the opposite of positive integers (also known as the natural numbers). A single integer represents the total number of objects or elements or things in a collection. The numbers that may be either positive, negative, or 0 are known as integers (no decimals). Integers may be added or subtracted just like whole numbers.

When you add and subtract integers, you're doing the addition and subtraction operations on the two or more numbers you're adding and subtracting. Before proceeding any further, it's critical to understand what an integer's absolute value is. On a number line, the absolute value of an integer is the distance between the number and 0. As a scalar quantity, distance has no inherent directionality. Every time, the mood is upbeat and upbeat.

Integer Addition

To say something has been added usually implies that something has been increased in value. Integer addition, on the other hand, may result in a rise or reduction in the supplied number's value. The value of the provided number decreases if we add a negative integer, and increases if we add a positive integer. Let us look at some examples of integer addition.

Ex. 1. Suppose you have 5 marbles. You get 5 more from your friend. How many total marbles do you have?

Ans. You have (5 + 5 = 10) marbles now.

Ex. 2. You had 4 chocolates. You got 4 more from your aunt. How many total chocolates do you own?

Ans. You have (4 + 4 = 8) chocolates now.

In the addition of integers, there are three possible outcomes:

Adding two positive integers (e.g. 15 + 5 = 20)

Adding two negative integers together (e.g. (-5) + (-3) = -8)

A positive number plus a negative integer added together (8 - ( -5) = 13)

Integer subtraction

When you subtract an integer from another integer, you're decreasing its value of the integer. Integers, on the other hand, may have their value increased or decreased as a result of a subtraction operation.

For example, If your height was 4 ft and now, it is 5.5 ft. By how much height have you gained?

The answer = 5.5 ft - 4 ft = 1.5 ft.

Integer subtraction also has three possible outcomes, similar to addition. They are as follows:

Subtraction of two positive integers (e.g. 6 - 5 = 1)

Subtraction of two negative numbers (e.g. -1-1 = -2)

Positive and negative number subtraction (e.g. {6 - (-1)} = 7)
