Conversion of percentage to fractions

Conversion of Percentage into Fraction and Decimal Numbers

The percentage is simple to understand. It means per hundred. The symbol of percentage is %. We can convert percentages to fractions or decimals.

For example, 43% can be written as 43/100 infraction and 0.43 as a decimal. We can easily convert percentages to decimals and fractions.

Conversion of percentage to fractions:

It is very easy to convert percentages to fractions. First, you have to drop the symbol of percentage and then you have to write the number and divtopicIde it by a hundred.

Example 1: Convert 67% to fractions

                     67%

                  = 67/100

Example 2: Convert 40% to fractions

                   40%

                 =40/100

Now we have to reduce the fraction further.

                 = 40/100 = 4/10= 2 / 5

                 So 40% is equal to 2 / 5

While conversion of the percentage to a fraction is we have to remember two important steps:

First, you have to convert it into an improper fraction if the percentage is given as a mixed fraction.

Then you have to remove the percentage symbol. Write 100 in the denominator of the fraction.

And reduce the fraction to its lowest form if possible.

If we are converting the fraction into a percentage we need to multiply the fraction by a hundred.

Conversion of percentage to decimals:

For conversion of percentage to decimals, you need to remove the decimal point and then divtopicIde by 100. Then multiply the denominator with the power of 10 with as many zeros as a decimal place in the numerator.

Example 3: Convert 36% to decimals.

                      36%

                   = 36/100 = 0.36

Expressing quantities as a percentage:

As we know that percentage means per one hundred. For expressing the quantities as a percentage first we need to multiply the fraction by a hundred. And then we need to find the fraction. From that fraction, we can also find decimals.

To convert a percentage to decimals first you need to change it to fraction and then change it to decimal.

Example 4: Convert 1 / 4 fraction to percentage to decimals.

                   =1 / 4 * 100

                   = 100/4

                   = 25%

Now we will convert this percentage to decimal

                   25% = 25/100 = 0.25

Example 5: 166 students out of 200 passed the mathematics test and 102 students passed out of 150 students in the Science test. Find the percentage of the students who passed in maths and science?

Percentage of students who passed in mathematics= 166 * 100 / 200

                                                                                  =  83%

Percentage of students who passed in science= 102 * 100 / 200

                                                                          = 68%

So the percentage of students who passed in mathematics is 83% and in science is 68%.

Example 6: If 45% of the mangoes are rotten out of 1200 mangoes. How many of them are good mangoes?

Percentage of mangoes rotten = 45%

Number of mangoes rotten= 45/100  * 1200

                                           = 45 * 1200 / 100

                                           = 540

Number of good mangoes= 1200 - 540 = 660.

Example 7: 12 % of a quantity is equal to 30. Find the quantity.

Let the quantity be x

12% of X = 30

12/100 * X = 30

X= 30 * 100/ 12

X= 250

Show the quantity is equal to 250.
