Air is essential for all living creatures on Earth. Even though we cannot see air, we are able to sense its presence. When flying a kite, swinging clothes, turning pages of a book, or sieving, we might see its presence in our everyday lives.

Definition of wind or what is wind?

During the rainy season, when a storm approaches, you may have seen that trees are uprooted and roofs are blown away. This is because the wind is blowing at a high speed. Thus air moving with some speed is known as wind.

Air exerts pressure

Pressure is the constant physical pressure applied on or against a body when anything comes into touch with it. Air exerts pressure in many ways depending on the circumstances, on all things, and in all directions. When the wind is blowing, air pressure causes the leaves of trees, thin hoardings, and flags to flutter. Air pressure is used to inflate the tires and balloons.

Pressure is the physical force exerted on or against a body when two or more objects come into contact.

Knowing about air pressure

When we inflate or push air into a bicycle tire tube, the air molecules hit its walls, creating air pressure. The inner air pressure expands the bicycle tire tube. Air pressure instopicIde a bicycle tube ensures that the tube remains strong and gives the tire a firm grip. If we continue to add far more air to the bicycle tube, the air pressure will build to the point where the tube may rupture. These findings also demonstrate that air exerts pressure.

Air pressure is caused due to the continuous battering of passing air molecules against the paper strip.

High-velocity winds

Reduced air pressure accompanies high-speed winds.

The air flows from regions of greater pressure to regions of lower pressure. The bigger the pressure difference, the quicker air travels. Due to the sun's heat, the air gets heated, resulting in low atmospheric pressure. Therefore, the warm air rises while the surrounding chilly air travels towards the ocean.

Similarly, if a strong wind blows over the roofs of homes, it will lower the air pressure above the roofs, and if the roofs are weak, increased air pressure from below will lift the roofs, which may then be blown away by the strong winds. Therefore, dwellings with weak roofs may be lifted and carried away by the high-velocity wind known as a storm.
