Motion and Measurement of Distances
People used to travel large distances only on foot in the ancient days. Animals were the only ground transportation method capable of transporting huge objects. Since people knew the logs floats on water, people utilized logs to build boats for transportation purposes in earlier days. Only with the creation of the wheel dtopicId transportation undergo a fundamental shift.
Developing different means of travelling with various modes of transport
Humans have been inventing new modes of transportation to go from one location to another since the dawn of time.
They built boats that resembled creatures that live in water in order to navigate through water currents. They developed the wheel, which paved the way for the development of other animal-powered means of transportation such as carts.
Humans invented the steam engine in the early nineteenth century, and it was soon followed by cars and other motorized vehicles.
The steam engine's discovery in the 19th century sparked the construction of railways, which were used to transport people and products. Automobiles including motor vehicles, buses and lorries were also made available. To speed things up even further, air travel was created.
However, in order to choose the most suitable mode of transportation to reach our location, we must first compute the difference in trip time using different modes of transport. That brings us to a fundamental question: how do we measure? Does everywhere we see is made through measurement and the answer is yes.
Example: Stitching clothing, preparing food, gardening, constructing a cabinet, etc.
Measurements
"Measurement" refers to the process of comparing unknown quantities (a number) to well-established constants (a unit).
If the book's length is longer than the palm of your hand, then it would be measured in terms of some number. Earlier, the common measurement techniques used were "hand span" or ‘foot span'.
Hand Span and Foot Span
The distance measured, starting from the tips of the thumb to the little finger on one's extended hand is called a hand span, while the measurement of one's foot length is called a foot span.
What was wrong with a hand span and a foot span?
It is impossible to accurately measure the book using hand or foot span since no two people's hands or feet are the same size.
In other words, if you don't know the precise length of your hand or foot, you can't accurately estimate the length of the book.
Thus, it was a matter of common sense that realization came through that the measurement varied from one indivtopicIdual to other and soon this type of measurement was stopped. It is thus became necessary for us to devise a universally accepted measuring system.
Length is a basic physical quantity, and a ruler can be used to determine the length of an article or a straight line. Strings or threads are used to measure the length of curved lines.
Using the Straight Line Technique to Measure a Line or Object.
A ruler's zero mark should be aligned with the edge of an object while determining its length.
The length of the thing may be determined by observing the reading on the ruler between the starting and the final points. A straight line's length may be measured using the same method.
Method for Determining the curved line length.
Start by taking a non-stretchable thread and on one of its ends, you tie a knot. take the other end of the thread to other end where you have to finish taking the measurement.
As you stretch the thread, mark it with your finger when you reach the opposite end of the curved line. Next, take measurements of the curved line by placing the thread on a metre scale and tracing the knot to the specified point.
