About air.

All living organisms on the planet need air. Even though we cannot see air, we can sense its presence. We may feel its presence in our daily lives when we fly a kite; when our garments swing; when the pages of a book flap; when we sift grains, and a huge gust of wind during storms.

Understanding what is wind

Wind is defined as moving air that is traveling at a certain speed.

A weathercock is an excellent illustration of flowing air. When placed in an open area, a weathercock revolves. It travels in the direction of the wind or spins in the direction of the wind. A weathercock assists in indicating the direction of air movement. It is quite beneficial for weather forecasting.

Air is a gaseous mixture, composed of the following components: 0.9 percent argon, 0.04 percent carbon dioxtopicIde, 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and about 1% water vapor. Air is necessary for breathing and combustion, and the presence of life on the planet earth is mostly due to the presence of oxygen and other gases in the air.

Nitrogen is the principal ingredient of air, whereas oxygen is the secondary component. Additionally, it includes carbon dioxtopicIde, water vapor, and dust particles, as well as a variety of other gases such as argon, krypton, neon, and xenon. It has also been observed that the composition of air varies with location.

Understanding our atmosphere

The atmosphere is more like an envelope of air that surrounds the globe and extends several kilometers above it. This layer is critical for life on our planet because it supplies us with oxygen for breathing purpose.

As we ascend above the earth's surface, the air becomes thinner.

Hence, mountaineers and others who climb mountains take oxygen masks or oxygen cylinders with them.

Anytime a fire breaks out within a confined room, people instopicIde the room may experience asphyxia. This is because the room is filled with carbon dioxtopicIde.

Carbon dioxtopicIde makes up less than 1% of the atmosphere and is produced when plants and animals use oxygen for respiration.

Carbon dioxtopicIde is used by plants to create their nourishment.

Our ecosystem is contaminated by the burning of dry leaves and agricultural restopicIdues. This is because of the carbon dioxtopicIde gas produced during combustion.

Experiment to understand the presence of oxygen and carbon dioxtopicIde

1. Take two topicIdentically sized lit candles and arrange them on the table.

2. Using a clear glass tumbler, cover one of the candles.

3. After a period of time, the candle covered by the glass tumbler burns out. The other, on the other hand, continues to burn.

This is because the glass tumbler contains a finite quantity of oxygen. When the majority of the oxygen component instopicIde the glass is depleted, carbon dioxtopicIde is formed and the candle will cease to burn. 

Simultaneously, the other candle burned owing to the constant presence of oxygen.

In this experiment, we are observed that the gas component that fueled the candle's combustion is referred to as oxygen. 

About Nitrogen

Nitrogen is the primary component of air that does not promote combustion. Nitrogen makes up about four-fifths of the atmosphere. It accounts for about 78 percent of our atmosphere.

Nitrogen is used by plants to synthesize proteins that are required for growth. Additionally, it is an excellent fertilizer. Nitrogen is required for the development of all living organisms.

Water vapor

Water vapor is present in the air and when air comes into touch with a cold surface, it condenses, forming droplets of water.

Water vapor in the air is critical to the water cycle process. Water vapor rises to the surface of the air, where it is cooled and condenses to create clouds, which leads to rain.

Dust and smoke.

Smoke is composed of dust particles and noxious gases that are detrimental to the environment. The primary source of smoke is the combustion of fuel by humans and in factories.

In factories, long chimneys are utilized so that it doesn't harm our body in any way. The factory smoke not only affects humans but also the birds and other animals that live in the nearby area.

In a congested metropolis, traffic police officers wear masks to protect themselves from the toxic fumes released by automobiles.

Significance of Air.

Seeing dust is present in the air

Make a small slit (narrow hole) or open the window slightly such that narrow sun rays enter your room. For the same, see to it that the door faces the sun to enable natural light into the room. In the sunshine, small sparkling particles can be seen and they are known as dust.

During the winter, a ray of sunshine flowing through the trees reveals the dust particles. As a result, we may deduce that air includes dust particles and smoke as well. It varies with time and location. A transparent glass pane allows for a good view of the dust particles.

How our body prevents dust from entering our lungs?

Typically, we inhale air via our nose rather than our mouth. This is because the nose contains fine hair and mucus that act as filters for dust particles. It keeps dust particles out of the respiratory system. Breathing via the mouth is not recommended, since hazardous dust particles may readily enter the body and wreak havoc on our health.

Oxygen in water and soil.

When water is heated for a long period of time (but not until it boils), tiny bubbles emerge on the inner surface of the container. You would see bubbles, dissolved in air, escaping from the water. When the heating is continued for some more time, the water is converted to vapor and water starts to boil.

Aquatic creatures breathe oxygen dissolved in water. When a tiny amount of water is dropped over a pile of dirt, small air bubbles emerge, indicating the presence of air.

Numerous plants and creatures that live in the soil need oxygen to survive. Numerous creatures, such as earthworms, bunnies, meerkats, and mice excavate tunnels and holes deep under the soil.

These perforations allow air to enter and exit the soil. When water enters these holes in the soil during the rainy season, animals and worms emerge for respiration.

Replacing oxygen

Photosynthesis is the process through which plants produce their food with the assistance of oxygen. They generate more oxygen than they eat in this process. It is also employed for seed dissemination and works as a pollinator.
